Adventures in U.S. History Week 4

Week 4 of Adventures in U.S. History was so much fun with three adventurous little children! There were so many hands-on activities this week to make up for our more workbook-ish Week 3.

This week we added "The Light of the World" to our names of Jesus poster and "made" candles by gluing "Jesus the Light of the World" and crayon shavings to some votives. Big Brother made a light switch cover to remind him to practice his memory verse.

We began All About Spelling 2 this week by reviewing all of our spelling rules from Level 1. We also finished practicing handwriting for each letter of the alphabet. Big Brother made ABCs and 123s for dinner to celebrate.

History was a blast this week as we read through the book North American Indians, made wigwams and tepees, and learned a little bit of sign language.

A few tough subjects came up this week including the religious beliefs of various tribes, the Trail of Tears, and the Reservation system. This allowed us to point back to our need for Jesus, the Lord who saves.

The kids assembled and decorated Native American Drum Games from our Adventures Craft Kit. These were a lot of fun to play with as we talked about Native American games and traditions.

We continued drawing practice and learning the words to God Bless America. In Latin, we learned some greetings and responses. In addition to our daily Latin songs, we played the Monkey Match game to review the words we have learned so far.

In Science, we started learning about the universe and stars. We pretended our porch was the Earth and pretended to travel at the speed of light. We walked 2 seconds to the "moon" (our doormat) and 8 minutes to the "sun" a lamp post outside of our neighborhood.

We also talked about gravity. We did a gravity experiment, where Big Brother dropped an empty index card box and a full box to see which travels faster. He guessed that the full box would land first.

He was shocked to see that the boxes landed at the same time!

In Math, we began adding by regrouping and continued to solidify our addition and subtraction facts with our math Wrap-Ups.

We did not get to Nature Study this week. We had planned to look for constellations one evening, but it rained or was cloudy every single night that we would have been able to stay up. We hope to get in two Nature Studies in week 5!
