Adventures in U.S. History Week 3

Week 3 of Adventures took a little bit longer than a week due to Mom getting a sore throat. We took one day off of school, which meant we had to finish the week up on the following Monday.

When I plan out my year, I label each "week" in my curriculum as a "unit." Somehow, that makes me feel a bit better about not doing each week of work on a Monday-Friday schedule.

During "Unit 3", our Bible study continued focusing on Jesus meaning "the Lord saves". We talked about Jesus saving us from our sin and how to live like Jesus. We made stained glass window hangers using shaved crayons and WWJD bracelets with alphabet beads and pipe cleaners. Big Brother wanted to put a heart on the bracelet because Jesus loves us.

English lessons introduced the concept of when to use is and are. Big Brother had to find sentences containing is and are for his copywork exercises. We also reviewed what a sentence is.

In History, we learned about Jamestown. Big Brother loved hearing stories about Pocahontas so much that he read three chapter books about her and Squanto on our day off of school. We watched the NEST Pocahontas video using the RightNow Media subscription that our church provides for members. We did not do a lot of hands-on crafts this week because Mom did not feel like prepping a lot of things.

We used the June Raddish kit to supplement our learning this week. The theme was "Edible Elements." The Peach Pancake Puff tied in with our science lessons on air.

The Earth Burger, Campfire S'mores, and Watermelon Fresca made for a great dinner! We roasted some vegetables in the oven to go with the black bean burger.

We also made homemade ice cream in a bag! We talked about the science behind adding air to ice cream to make it lighter and creamier!

We continued the next few Math exercises on addition and subtraction in our Singapore 2A books. We used addition wrap ups and played a game with our Math U See blocks. The boys would take turns picking two blocks out and the other boy would have to find a block to add to the shortest block to make it equal the longest block. This was a great way to review equivalent facts.

We continued daily drawing practice, learned how to ask someone's name in Latin, and worked on learning the words to God Bless America.

Once again, Nature Study came to us! We found a katydid nymph in our garage and brought it inside for Nature Study. We looked up information about katydids and learned that the nymph is usually brighter than the adult. We talked a little bit about lifecycles of insects and we drew a picture of our Nature Friend in our journals before releasing him back into the wild.
